Advanced Learning in the ECSD
The ECSD has adopted the language of advanced learning (AL) as opposed to the language of gifted and talented. In doing so, the ECSD aims to advance a support system that is more inclusive and flexible than traditional exclusionary gifted education approaches used in years past. Procedures for developing advanced learning plans in Wisconsin are anchored in the following guiding principles detailed below.
Intelligences are dynamic and fluid.
Tailoring programming to meet the needs of each learner is an ongoing process throughout the ECSD. Gathering and analyzing timely and relevant data to ensure fluid programming designed to address each learner’s needs at all points throughout each school year is a priority in the ECSD. As intelligences are both dynamic and fluid, aligning student enrichment in a fluid manner is a critical aspect of advanced learning programming.
Giftedness is inclusive.
Providing engaging and enriching opportunities for students in developmentally appropriate environments is a best practice in ensuring a robust educational experience while attending to the social and emotional needs of advanced learners. Implementing research-based universal grade level curriculum for all learners, while creating the time, space, and appropriate programming tailored to meet each learner supports the social, emotional, and academic needs of all students in the ECSD.
Educational systems should be responsive.
An ongoing review of assessment data and enrichment practices will drive the programming provided to students receiving advanced learning services. This responsive approach to the fluid nature of social, emotional, and academic growth is a priority among the ECSD in providing the most appropriate and timely programming for each learner. Programming allowing for adjustments rooted in progress monitoring is a critical component of a strong advanced learning plan.
Families of students being offered advanced learning services and/or opportunities to attend events through the Advanced Learning Department will receive letters explaining the services recommended.
