All English Learners in the state of Wisconsin take the Access for EL's, an academic language proficiency exam, the Forward Exam or ACT/ACT Aspire. These exams assess student proficiency in the content and skills embodied by the state standards. Together, these assessments monitor students who are learning English as a second language to ensure that they are developing the language skills to be successful in their studies, and are demonstrating proficiency in reading, mathematics, social studies, and science along with their monolingual peers.  The ACCESS for ELs will be administered to English Learners throughout the months of December and January. If you have questions regarding the ACCESS, please contact your child's EL teacher.

Many students who attend the Evansville Community School District have the special gift of speaking two or more different languages, or being in a family who does the same.  English Learning, or EL, is a program to assist students in learning and becoming academically proficient in the English language.  In EL we focus on language development and literacy skills in order to support grade level instruction and student learning.  This support often occurs in the regular classroom, but may include a more individualized approach through small group instruction.

About Us

Many students who attend the Evansville Community School District have the special gift of speaking two or more different languages, or being in a family who does the same. English Learning, or EL, is a program to assist students in learning and becoming academically proficient in the English language. In EL we focus on language development and literacy skills in order to support grade level instruction and student learning. This support often occurs in the regular classroom, but may include a more individualized approach through small group instruction.

Families can support their children at home in many ways. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Talk, read and encourage your child every day!
  • If you and your child feel more comfortable with your native language, then talk and read in that language.
  • You will help your child develop comprehension skills which will help him or her later in English, too.
  • You and your child need to remember that speaking two languages is a gift and an asset!

Parents and family members do not have to be English-speakers to support their child's learning.  If you don't speak English, then speak and read in your native language. Developing an understanding of academic concepts can occur in any language.  If you are interested in learning English along with your child, please feel free to ask us for suggestions, but do not let a language barrier stop you.  We are always happy to help!
